Six Shark Species Call Croatian Waters Home
A potentially deadly shark attack was narrowly avoided in Dubrovnik, Croatia, this week when a shark was spotted swimming just meters from a popular bathing beach. The shark, a pelagic species typically found in open waters, was identified as a blue shark, one of six shark species that inhabit the Croatian Adriatic Sea.
Over the past 150 years, there have been 11 fatal shark attacks in the Adriatic Sea. In addition to blue sharks, other common shark species in Croatian waters include fox sharks, sand tiger sharks, and giant sharks. A total of 47 different shark species have been recorded in the region.
Experts are investigating the reason for the shark's close approach to the beach, but they believe it may have been searching for food. Blue sharks are known to prey on a variety of fish, squid, and other marine life. While they are not typically aggressive towards humans, they have been known to attack if they feel threatened.
Following the incident, officials have advised swimmers to be cautious and to avoid swimming in areas where sharks have been spotted. They have also increased patrols in the area to monitor the shark population and ensure the safety of beachgoers.
